Coach the Coach

We all know the impact of coaching on performance – it’s old news.   What is trending is the move from external coaches to internal coaches.  In our own business, we don’t really do much coaching these days, it’s much more about advisory.  In part that’s because we believe that coaching should really be an internal function.  In our view, coaching should be part of every manager’s DNA.But of course the reality is that it’s a whole lot easier to be directive rather than help people find answers for themselves.  It’s more efficient to expect people to mind read and then sort it out when they get it wrong.  It’s less “mushy” to yell at someone for their mistakes than it is to spend time with them to ensure they’ve understood what you want them to do.  It’s less uncomfortable to hold someone accountable for not cocking something up than it is to give them responsibility for achieving a great result. At our last Mastery workshop we ran a session on coaching to help people change that reality.  It was a challenging session for a lot of people, but the results have been fantastic.  Here’s what one senior manager said:“I should also tell you, I was a bit unsure of “coaching staff” after the last Breakthrough Mastery Session. I have now started coaching 3 employees and the feedback and process has been amazing for both parties.  Thanks for the encouragement to just get on with it!!!! :-)”By the way, we’ll be running that session at our Growth Centre on Wednesday 19 August.
