Making Music

My brother and I are playing at The Elbow Room in Herne Bay on Sunday July 5 from 4-7pm.  This will be only the second time that he and I have played together outside of family events (there have been plenty of those, so it’s not as if we’re out of practice). The first time was a few months ago, and it was a total blast.  It was amazing: we each knew what the other was going to do before they did it, we complemented each other perfectly, and as a result the energy was fantastic. So we decided to take it a step further and move beyond the songs we knew by heart, and we’ve got a number of 21st century songs which sound really good (though as my son says, they’re still in the “dad music” genre). So what’s the significance (beyond a shameless plug for the gig – be there or be square)?  One of the trends we’ve noticed is that people are moving away from individual coaching and more towards group-based learning.  We had a Mastery workshop last week (ratings of 91.6% - just saying), and the feedback from the MDs was all about the traction their leadership teams were getting as a result of being on the same page.  In our Velocity programme, we’re seeing a trend towards business partners joining the programme so that they can be challenged, inspired and held to account together. A partnership (or a team), when it’s aligned and in sync, is a fantastic thing to be part of.  There is real synergy, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. But where a partnership or team is out of whack, it’s just 100 miles of bad road. I’ve worked with dysfunctional partnerships, where success can be defined as everyone getting out with all body parts still intact. If you go wider, the same is true of family businesses.  Part of the reason we play together so well is because we’ve been doing it all our lives. There is tremendous power in family partnerships, and it can be constructive or destructive. We’ve learned a lot about these dynamics over the years.  If your partnership or family business isn’t creating that spark and enjoyment, give us a call. Or come and have a chat during the set breaks at The Elbow Room, Jervois Rd, 5 July at 4pm. No cover charge if you’re good looking.
